Katherine Cushing, PhD, is Director of Sustainability and Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies Department at San Jose State University. Before joining the faculty in 2003, she was the Associate Director for the Program on Urban Studies at Stanford, where she taught and conducted research in environmentally sustainable cities, business and the environment, and qualitative research methods.
Cushing was a Senior Research Associate at the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security in Oakland, where she researched environmental certification systems and global water issues. And as a consultant, she conducted research for clients, including the US Army Corps of Engineers. She is Project Lead on the Urban Water Cycle Scenario Evaluation Tool for Sustainable Silicon Valley, a collaborative initiative to improve the environment and resource conservation in Silicon Valley.

Cushing has a BS in Industrial Engineering and Science from Northwestern University. She has an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a specialty in Environmental Planning and Management from Stanford University.
