National Water Research Institute is a 501c3 nonprofit that was founded in 1991. NWRI collaborates with water utilities, regulators, and researchers in innovative ways to help develop new, healthy, and sustainable sources of drinking water.
We assemble teams of scientific and technical experts that provide credible independent review of water projects, develop recommendations that support investment in water infrastructure and public health, and enable water resource management decisions grounded in science and best practices.
We fund fellowships to support the water scientists of tomorrow, and we award the Clarke Prize, one of the world’s leading water-industry prizes, to water scientists, researchers, and policy experts that are making a difference today.

NWRI’s member agencies include Inland Empire Utilities Agency, Irvine Ranch Water District, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Orange County Sanitation District, and Orange County Water District.

Dr. Amy E. Childress, 2024 Clarke Prize Laureate
NWRI is pleased to announce that Dr. Amy E. Childress is will be awarded the 2024 Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Water Science and Technology.
Childress is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California and is Director of the ReWater Center and Academic Lead for the Water Reuse Consortium. Click to read more.
