Envisioning the Clarke Prize: 2025 and Beyond

Since 1994, the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) and the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation (the Foundation) have awarded the Clarke Prize to thought leaders in water research, science, technology, or public policy. The $50k prize has helped leading American water scientists and academics to advance their research for more than 30 years.

To keep the Clarke Prize strong and relevant, a committee of past prize recipients and NWRI leadership are working on a renewed vision for the award.

During 2025, these planners will plot a course for a stronger and more meaningful prize by identifying a new funding model and redefining award criteria. To that end, the sole focus of the committee is now on the future of the Clarke Prize. The annual prize and award ceremony will be deferred until 2026.

Look for the new vision for the Clarke Prize to be announced in early 2026, with details about eligibility, the nomination and selection process, and timing of the award ceremony.

The Clarke Prize is recognized by the International Congress of Distinguished Awards as one of the most prestigious water awards in the world. NWRI looks forward to continuing that legacy.
