NWRI's member agencies are water and wastewater utilities that guide and govern NWRI for the purpose of conducting and supporting water research, education, and related activities.

Membership Dues
NWRI's membership dues are $50,000 a year, which is used to support NWRI's research program and related activities.Membership Benefits
NWRI's member agencies are entitled to serve on NWRI's governing body, the Board of Directors. Therefore, member agencies are directly involved in reviewing and guiding NWRI's projects and activities, including:NWRI Research Program
NWRI's research program supports multi-disciplinary, multi-geographic water science/policy research projects across the nation and abroad. Main topic areas include treatment technologies, water quality assessment, knowledge management, and exploratory research.
Collaborative Projects
NWRI can help support and manage projects sponsored by its member agencies.
Member agencies are also involved in the following programs and activities:
- Priority Partnerships. NWRI seeks priority partnerships with local, state, and national organizations with common interest.
- Independent Advisory Panels. NWRI's Independent Advisory Panels help public agencies review challenging issues facing the water and wastewater communities, leading to good policy decisions. NWRI is able to provide these types of independent, technical, and scientific review services to government agencies and water and wastewater agencies because of our reputation as a credible, third-party, research-oriented organization.
- NWRI Fellowship Program. NWRI provides over $100,000 a year in fellowships for graduate students researching topics in water, wastewater, and water resources at U.S. universities. Their research is then highlighted at NWRI's annual Graduate Fellowship Research Conference. Member agencies are listed as sponsors of both the Fellowship program and conference, and are invited to meet the students at related events.
- NWRI-Sponsored Events. NWRI develops and implements a range of education and outreach events, such as specialty conferences and workshops. Member agencies are listed as sponsors of these events and are provided with discounted or complimentary registration.
- NWRI Research Advisory Board. Projects under NWRI's Research Program are reviewed and evaluated twice yearly by our Research Advisory Board (RAB), which is made up of experts from across the nation in areas such as engineering, chemistry, microbiology, economics, environmental law, public policy, and political science. NWRI's Board Members are invited to attend RAB meetings to interact with the RAB.
- Sponsorships of Member and Local Events. NWRI actively supports our member agency events, such as children and family festivals, as well as local events, such as sponsoring awards for student science and engineering fairs.
- Clarke Prize. In 1993, NWRI established the Clarke Prize for excellence in water and wastewater research. The award includes a gold medallion and $50,000 cash prize. Member agencies are listed as sponsors and invited to attend the ceremony.
